Tips on Hanging Bird Houses
There are actually quite a few things to consider when Hanging Bird Houses.
Location, Location, Location
Most people think its hanging in the tree what could happen? Several things could happen rather easily which makes location mean everything.
1. Your hanging bird house might not be hanging any more if it’s not supported properly. This means the branch it’s hanging from needs to be able to handle the weight of the bird house. Some of our hanging bird houses are large and have some weight to them.
2. This goes along with #1… think about your weather. Does it get really windy where you want to hang your bird house? Remember the old nursery rhyme, “when the wind blows the cradle will rock and down will come”… well you get the idea. You don’t want that to happen!
3. Heat… do you live in a hot climate? Does your location have enough shade? A wooden bird house in direct sunlight can produce quite a bit of heat inside. Your guest want to be comfortable and get out of the heat and not be in it. Look for a spot that’s cool and inviting.
What about snow? Snow adds extra weight onto the branch which could cause the branch to break. The birds might not be there during this time, but the bird house probably will be. Might end up with the same results as #2. Not good!
4. Predators… you need to remember that certain predators can climb tree’s, some of them live in tree’s. Which means in order for the bird house to be in a safe location, you need to hang the bird house low enough from the branch that it can only be reached by flight. You don’t want it too close to the branch where a predator can simply get to it from the branch.
5. Back to location again except this time its geographical. Your location that is, where you live which also could be part of #3. But this time it’s not about the weather it’s about the birds.
Knowing which breed of feathered guest you want to attract will help you in determining how high or low to hang your bird house.
